R-Type - CPC Mode 0
Another Mode 0 CPC mock up of a Mode 1 game. I always felt the CPC owners got sorta cheated with R-Type. We got a version lacking in color, with minimal sound and a very small screen. C64 owners got a large screen, more color (though still the drab C64 palette) and a decent soundtrack. Wanted to make up a screenshot showing how R-Type could have looked on the old Amstrad. 16 colors 160x240 'wide pixel' resolution. Used a shot of the original arcade game as reference. Ships were easy but the tiles at the bottom were very hard since the original arcade version used a sort of beigey color scheme for those. The CPC doesn't have those colors. The C64 version used greyscale for that part. The CPC only has 1 grey. So I had to improvise with different colors. It's a matter of opinion if my choices worked or not but I think they look fine and theres actually more detail in this than the original higher res CPC version so I'm pleased with it. Been told that it looks closer to the arcade game than the C64 version does so even better.

AMC Sprite RunningAMC AliensAMC Shot 1
Started doing a remake of the old game Astro Marine Corps (based on CPC version as I felt it was the best one overall). I did this rather substandard run animation for the main player design but as of 2007 this has been recolored green and used as an enemy sprite instead as I felt the design didn't quite say 'heroic marine' to me. The aliens are based (loosely) on the first creatures you encounter on the CPC/Spec version of the original game. The lil screenshot shows that soldier firing, and his feet adjusting position to the slant of the hillside.

Name: Gradius Ship Date: Nov 2005 Software: Paint Shop Pro 7 (PC)
Vic Viper
A Small sprite of the Vic Viper from the Gradius series of games by Konami requested by Hyun for a Gradius fangame he was making. This was the amount of lives icon.

Name: Kid Zombie Date: Oct 2005 Software: Pro Motion V5.1 (PC)
Kid ZombieKid Zombie Stuff
A Character for a halloween themed game I was starting to make at the time for a friend of mine. The nursemaid is based on a character by Kitty Clark. Both the zombie and nurse have since been recolored for use as enemies in my first CPC project.

Name: Tanks Again Date: Sep 2005 Software: Paint Shop Pro 7 (PC)
Tanks
More tanks I did for a simple shoot 'em up engine with top down tanks shooting each other and leaving tread tracks on the ground. Plan to use that engine and these sprites again sometime.

Name: Mage Craft Date: Sept 2005 Software: Pro Motion V5.1 (PC)
Mage Craft
I did some larger versions of Darthlupi's sprites he made for his popular game Mage Craft after talking with him about a newer version of the game. His original sprites on the left, my remade versions on the right.

Kate
Was a bit of freelance work having to pixel up ladies in various states of undress for a cellphone game. Not very experienced drawing women like this so it took me a long time but I'm happy with how it turned out. It's actually based on an old friend of mine from my college years.

Name: Pacman 2005 Date: Aug 2005 Software: Paint Shop Pro 7 (PC)
Pacman 2005
My own version's of the sprites from Namco's classic game Pacman, I did for an official Game Maker request topic from Mark Overmars the creator of the program but I didn't finish in time and I have no idea what happened in the end of that whole thing.

Name: Gameboy Color Robin Hood RPG Date: Aug 2005 Software: Paint Shop Pro 7 (PC)
Gameboy Color Robin Hood RPG
Done for a Pixelopolis challenge where we had to do Gameboy Color style 16x16 RPG sprites and mock screenshot. I went with a Robin Hood theme but didn't finish the backdrop I had intended. I later reused and edited these sprites of mine for a min Robin Hood platform game in 2007, progress of which is on the Games page (when it's up).

Name: Roland On The Ropes Date: Apr 2005 Software: Pro Motion V5.1 (PC)
Roland On The Ropes
Concept sprite for my planned remake of the CPC game 'Roland on the Ropes' known on other formats as 'Fred'. Went for a semi-Indiana Jones/Aussie dude kinda look...

Name: ThunderCats CPC Date: Aug 2005 Software: Paint Shop Pro 7 (PC)
ThunderCats CPC
ThunderCats sprites I did in the style of the CPC's 16 color wide pixel Mode 0 resolution. Had never much liked the official ThunderCats game and wanted to take a shot at what I felt it could have looked like. To be honest I feel these CPC mock up sprites look better than the Amiga version's graphics. The alternated pinker version on the right were to do with an atmospheric scene I was pixelling up which I may finish sometime.

Name: Ghoul Date: Aug 2005 Software: Paint Shop Pro 7 (PC)
Ghoul
A major reworking of a sprite by K_mano of GMPixel. Done to show better shading and design. Looking back I feel I overdid it.

Howlin' Jack 2005
Updated version of an old piece I did (also listed on this site on 2003 page). Much happier with this version and have used it as an avatar a lot.

Name: Wizard Date: Jul 2005 Software: Paint Shop Pro 7 (PC)
Wizard
Wizard sprite I did for a freelance project that fell through due to a number of reasons. I quite like the sprite though

Name: Wolf Icon Date: Jul 2005 Software: Paint Shop Pro 7 (PC)
Wolf
A Pixelopolis challenge to create 32x32 pixel size icons using only 8 colors and representing something from nature so naturally I did a wolf.

Name: Explora Ship And Pilot Date: Jul 2005 Software: Pro Motion V5.1 (PC)
Explora Ship And Pilot
A ship and character I designed for what was to be an Eo community project but was gradually abandoned. The R-Type style cockpit is necessary so that the man and ship can both be of a small enough size, as the man was to be able to leave his small ship at points in the game.

Name: Blasterines Date: May 2005 (Revised Feb 2007) Software: Paint Shop Pro 7 (PC)
Blasterines
Blasterines are my lil group of hardcore marines for a project of mine that intends to be sorta like Super Mario World crossed with Contra. The really retro versions at the bottom are the original ones I did that while just drawing in style of really ancient arcade machines and they developed over the last couple years into the guys above.

Name: 'Feral' Beast Form Sprite Date: May 2005 Software: Paint Shop Pro 7 (PC)
'Feral' Beast Form Sprite
A fighting game style sprite (and alternate color palette schemes as in most fighting games) of my character 'Feral' in a mid-beast form. Not quite human and not quite werewolf. I later submitted this with a portrait piece for the King Of Spriters collaboration.

Name: Street Fighter RPG Date: May 2005 Software: Paint Shop Pro 7 (PC)
Charlie RPGKarin RPG
These were done for a Pixelopolis challenge which, if I recall correctly, was to make RPG style sprites out of fighting game characters. Obviously I went for Capcom and the Street Fighters but I chose to pick a couple of the not as overdone characters that I quite liked in the Alpha series (so no Ryu, Ken, Akuma, Guile, Chun Li etc... cos eeeeveryone does those), so I did Charlie and Karin. Gave them a chunky 'Secret of Mana' sorta build because I wanted to make sure if these sprites were to be animated they'd feel like they'd hit hard.

Name: Grumpy Ape Date: May 2005 Software: Paint Shop Pro 7 (PC)
Grumpy Ape
A GMC request but I forget for who and if they actually used it. Nevertheless it's become one of my most popular pieces judging by the amount of people on PixelJoint who have faved it (52 at time of typing this) and have actually selected it as their avatar (currently 25). A friend told me it looks a bit like the apes in the music video for 'Clint Eastwood' by Gorillaz. It also turned up in what I think was a Vietnamese mobile phone game without my permission and was edited with strange teeth and recolored blue with some simple walking animation (cut and paste mostly).

Future Bike
A GMC request which asked to just do a kinda futuristic bike but not tooo futuristic from side and top down views.

An avatar based on my character art I helped with on the game 'Legend of Shadow' by Darthlupi

Gameboy Tank Game
Gameboy versions of my tank sprites from beginning of 2005 (shown several boxes below this one), made as a straight on tank shoot 'em up.

Name: 12 Color Palette Characters Date: Mar 2005 Software: Paint Shop Pro 7 (PC)
12 Color Palette Characters
A GMPixel challenge where you had to create twelve characters 30 pixels high all using colors from a twelve color palette of your choice. OK I only got four done but I like them. And yeah the girl's sword is broken.

Name: Switchblade - CPC Mode 0 Date: Mar 2005 Software: Pro Motion V5.1 (PC)
Switchblade - CPC Mode 0
A mock up of one of my favorite 8 bit games, the platform adventure SwitchBlade. Always loved this game on my Amstrad CPC and later the 16 bit version for Amiga. The standard CPC disk version had the playing field as only 4 colors but a 320x200 resolution (known as the CPC's Mode 1 resolution). I loved the detail and the atmosphere created with those limitations but had wondered what it might have looked like in the lower res but higher color Mode 0 (16 colors but 160x200 resolution creating that sorta blocky wide pixel effect a lot of CPC and C64 games have). After seeing how the C64 version looked (absolutely terrible graphics with just plain drab and ugly color schemes which make the sprites really hard to make out against the backdrops) I wanted to take a shot at how the CPC would have managed it with its much more vivid and saturated 27 color palette using only 16 on screen at once as the resolution allowed. I'm pretty happy with this as I feel I did ok with the color usage and created a fun chunky feel to it. Whether its as good as the original Mode 1 graphics is personal opinion I reckon.

Name: 'Convoy' Truck Date: Feb 2005 Software: Paint Shop Pro 7 (PC)
Convoy Truck
Prototype truck for top down shooter I'm making. Have a totally different truck design in mind now. This one was based on the Transformers Armada version of Optimus Prime. Wasn't overly happy with the shading on the front of the cab anyway.

These are some boxing game mock up images for a cellphone games company. The top image was for the title screen while the boxers below were intended in-game sprites.

Bunch of graphics for a tank based game much in the style of the old NES/Arcade game Battle City but for cellphones. Not posting all the tank directions movement and firing just incase someone tries to steal these and use in a game of their own, as I'm real fond of this work. The title logo went behind on the barrel of the gun on the main image and looked pretty cool.
